Air Pollution and Health This page is dedicated to Air Pollution and the Health concerns associated with Airplanes and Airports. If the Proposed Pickering Airport is built, all of these concerns will have a significant impact on the health and welfare of all inhabitants of the airport lands as well as the surrounding lands for many miles around. October 2003 Independent Air Quality Assessment Report by RWDI Inc. City of Toronto “Impact of Pearson Airport on Toronto Air Quality” October, 2004 "The HHRA concluded that airport emissions of most of the chemicals assessed are predicted to be within allowable limits. However, TPIA emissions of acrolein, NO2, and CO are predicted to exceed their respective acceptable health limits. Small particulate matter (PM10), which is also emitted from airport operations, could not be assessed at this time.” The Blairport Files “Exposing the Truth Behind a Disaster in the Making” Page "Imagine a vast bubble of polluted air approximately 20 miles across with an airport at its centre. The health of everyone who lives and works in that bubble is under serious threat, and those already suffering medical conditions will be at even greater risk. Welcome to the world of the mega-airport - an idea driven by greed, ignorance, and lack of vision.” Black Hole of Conservation Health Risks Page "Airport and aircraft activities are major contributors to smog and air pollution. Studies show the proximity to an airport can be directly linked to a significant increase in cancer risk, asthma and other health issues. Increased air traffic to the Pickering Airport will result in increased emissions of noise and pollutants and have harmful implications for human health and the environment." “Alliance of Residents Concerning O'Hare” Article on Aviation Fuel Exposure "There is an increasing requirement for more airports and runways as travel increases. As a consequence, more people are being exposed to Aviation fuel. What groups of people might be exposed, and is there any toxicity associated with exposure to aviation fuel?" P.L.A.N.E “Exposing Airports Poison Circles” Article “If you live within six miles of an airport, you are at heightened risk of dying prematurely from environmentally induced cancer. The culprit is the pollution spewing from jet aircraft, ground vehicles and airport maintenance operations.” National Brain Tumor Foundation “Brain Tumors Near Airports” Article “We thought the situation in our community surrounding the SeaTac Airport (in Seattle) was dangerous. Because there was no other industry in the area, we suspected jet exhaust as the culprit. We began to make formal inquiries, but were told by the institutions that deal with cancer that we had no more in our area than anywhere else in King County. So in 1990 we decided to survey the community to establish a history.” Concerned Residents Against Airport Pollution (CRAAP) Jet Air Pollution Site "Addressing the ever-growing problems of Air and Noise Pollution, as well as other environmental and safety concerns due to the increased jet traffic and jet size at Santa Monica Airport and other airports around the country"
