The GTAA and Transport Canada need to do some serious review work of International Safety Standards before they create one of the worlds greatest nuclear threats. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei , has publicly stated that "The worlds 1300 nuclear installations cannot withstand a plane impact comparable to those of 9/11". The world regulatory body on nuclear safety also says that member states must spend what ever it takes to protect these facilities, and that the IAEA is considering imposing mandatory no fly zones in a 10 to 20km radius around nuclear plants. Given the extremely close proximity of the Proposed Pickering Airport to not one but two nuclear power plants, this proposal places literally millions of people at risk. The Pickering nuclear reactor, the largest in the world, is just 12km south of the proposed site. It lies directly on what would be the southern flight path for the airport and planes would be flying at just a 400m ceiling . The second reactor is 29km east on the eastern flight path it has a 700m ceiling. Airplanes on approach to this proposed mess would have to either pass directly over or within 2km of these facilities. The IAEA have regulations governing air plane crashes and places such events in categories which are available to view on their website www.iaea.org . Click safety regulations then SITE EVALUATION. There you will find External Human Induced Events. Click here to find the full text of the regulations and a formula. Once you look at the webpage you will clearly see that the airport the GTAA proposes cannot be built because it is in direct violation of our own regulations. In order for this regulation to be enforced we have to demand that the PERIODIC SAFETY REVIEW be done on both plants and we should tell the government the we want the IAEA to review it and for them to contact Mr. Paolo Contri, IAEA Nuclear Safety and Security Dept, Vienna. Former Premier Ernie Eves, on August 23, 2003, ordered a Nuclear Security Review citing the lack of No Fly Zones as a possible security risk, especially in the Bruce and Durham regions. Yet the Federal Government continues to sanction an airport development. What is wrong with them? Where are our Municipal, Regional and Federal representatives? Are they asleep at the wheel?? Or does the attraction of new tax revenue cause them to ignore our safety?. Ontario Public Safety and Security Commissioner Dr. James Young said “the Premier requested a review on the vulnerability of Nuclear Plants to potential air attacks. It's an issue largely overseen by Federal Nuclear Regulators" (Toronto Sun) . Ontario Power Generation had meetings with Durham Region Health Department on September 12, 2003 where OPG stated they are "in discussions with political interests on No Fly Zones over nuclear facilities"(www.region.durham.on.ca) I GUESS SOMEONE FORGOT TO TELL THE FEDERAL TRANSPORT MINISTRY AND THE GREATER TORONTO AIRPORT AUTHORITY!
